We Supply Mitumba Bales
to West Africa from
Melbourne
West Africa is one of the world's largest markets for imported used clothing. The trade is known by different names across the region — mitumba in Ghana and East Africa, okirika in Nigeria — but in both cases the product is the same: wholesale bales of used clothing sourced from higher-income countries and resold in local markets.
Australia's Wastesavers is a Melbourne-based supplier of mitumba and okirika bales for export to West Africa. Our products are 100% Australian sourced — genuine used clothing from Australian households, sorted and compressed into 45kg bales at our South East Melbourne warehouse.
Australian used clothing is well-regarded in West African markets for its quality, variety and garment condition. Container buyers across Ghana, Nigeria, Liberia and Sierra Leone return order after order because Australian sourcing consistently delivers a quality product that sells well in their local markets. View ProductSupplying Buyers Across
Four West African Countries
We supply container buyers in all four major West African used clothing import countries. Each market has its own trade terminology, port infrastructure and product preferences — here is what we know about each destination.
Ghana is home to the Kantamanto market in Accra — one of the largest second-hand clothing markets in the world. Mitumba bales are a cornerstone of the Ghanaian clothing economy, with tens of thousands of traders buying and reselling used clothing from imported containers weekly. All clothing categories are in strong demand — women's bales are the highest volume, followed by men's and kids'. Footwear, bags and textiles are popular add-ons.
Nigeria has one of the largest okirika (used clothing) industries in Africa. Major wholesale markets operate in Lagos, Kano, Port Harcourt and other cities — buying imported containers and distributing used clothing through retail networks across the country. Women's, men's and kids' bales all move well in the Nigerian market. Footwear and bags are particularly popular. Nigeria's large population makes it a high-volume destination market.
Liberia is an active used clothing import market with a well-established second-hand trade centred in Monrovia. Container buyers import bales through the Port of Monrovia and distribute through local markets. All clothing categories are in demand — women's, men's and kids'. Footwear and bags are consistent sellers. Australian-sourced product is well-received for its quality in the Liberian market.
Sierra Leone has a growing used clothing import market based in Freetown. Buyers import containers through the Freetown port and sell through local markets and traders. Women's and men's bales are the primary demand, with kids' clothing and footwear also popular. Australian-sourced product is valued for its variety and quality relative to other source countries.
Australian Sourcing
Is Valued in
West African Markets
Experienced West African used clothing traders know that source country matters. Australian used clothing consistently produces a quality, variety-rich product that outperforms lower-quality source countries in resale value and customer demand.
Australia has a large, diverse and affluent population that generates a broad range of used clothing types — from everyday casual wear through to quality workwear, formal garments and branded clothing. This variety and quality is what West African buyers are looking for when they choose an Australian supplier.
